The folks at Schaf are passionate about skincare, some would even say too passionate. They know the names of irritants that don’t belong in skin care better than they know the names of their own family, and nothing makes them happier than hearing from someone who’s skin they’ve helped improve.
Knowing that the average adults skin is 20 Lbs of their bodyweight inspired the folks at Schaf to protect it, and they formulate their products accordingly. The Schaf team’s ability to innovate is reflected in their response to the parking shortage at their office: they draw straws to see who rides the company bicycle to work for a week. Schaf is constantly improving and refining their formulas in subtle ways, which is a testament to their passion.
Thank you for doing an interview with us Peter, could you give us a little background on how you got started in the skincare world?
I’ve been a commercial photographer for almost 20 years now, shooting ads for major beauty brands. I specialize in liquids - splashing and tossing liquids. I spent years working with brands on set so I became familiar with the industry. I also had a local lab supply me with bulk liquids of various consistencies to use on set to replicate the brands' product I was shooting. One thing led to another and the next thing you know I asked the chemist from the lab to develop some shave and moisturizer samples that would address some issues I was having. I loved them so much I decided to launch a brand on my own.
Over the years we've seen a number of packaging changes and subtle adjustments to formulas, this makes it seem as though you are something of a perfectionist. What do you say to that?
I would say you’re very observant! I am constantly working to push the brand to a higher level. From the packaging to the formulations. As an example, we just received EWG Verification, and our scores are the highest possible. We are very proud of that - which has always been our goal to have the safest, simplest and most effective products possible.
What is the driving philosophy of your brand, and how does that affect the makeup of your products?
We believe in and prefer things to be simple and safe, but our products also have to be very effective - otherwise what’s the point? And it’s fun maneuvering our brand within the marketplace to find our niche.
What keeps us going is our dedicated client base and hearing how we literally change people’s lives by improving their confidence with clear healthy skin.
What Schaf products can you not live without, and why?
I shave almost every day - including my head. Our Shave Cream was our very first product. I developed it to solve a lifelong problem I was having with irritation. It works great and I can’t live without it. Moisturizer and Scrub are tied for second, but that’s just me. Every Schaf customer has their own favourite!
