Opinel is the quintessential French pocket knife. Their history of forging steel goes back to the early 1800's in the Opinel family, and the numbered sizing system that they are known for was created in 1897 by Joseph Opinel. Nowadays, Opinel is an internationally recognized design. Their minimalist designed has hardly changed, save for innovative new styles and the use of higher-quality modern steels.
Great choice for a first knife, or just a beautiful picnic knife. Personally, it was one of the first knives I ever got when I was younger and it's still one of my faves. Simple and timeless.
Nisaku Hori Hori Knife - $40
The Nisaku Hori Hori Knife is a perfect cross between a knife and a trowel. It is great for dividing perennials and, with inch and millimeter markings on the blade, it is handy for planting at the correct depth. It is also great for weeding, cutting roots, transplanting, and removing plants.
