The Iwasaki family is about as skilled as you can get when it comes to making razors. Using only the finest carbon steel, this blade is handcrafted in every sense. Iwasaki razors have incredible edge retention, so they are sure to last a lifetime or two with proper care and are capable of taking an incredibly silky edge. The shape of the head makes it easier to shave with, and the unwrapped steel handle is comfortable and simple.

This blade is meant to be held in your right hand and functions best this way, but can easily be used by a lefty as well. Kamisori tends to be a very ergonomic type of razor to use, especially for shaving smaller areas like beard edges and underarms. The main difficulty comes with the single-bevel blade. One side is honed like a standard razor, while the opposite side is concave, at a zero angle. His means a standard angle can be used on the beveled side, but a narrower angle must be used on the backside.

KEY INFORMATION

  • All razors are guaranteed shave-ready by our staff.
  • For help using your razor, we suggest you take a Straight Razor Shaving Class at one of our stores or feel free to contact us for advice.
  • This razor is made from high carbon steel, which is capable of amazing sharpness and great edge retention but requires a little extra care. Be sure to dry your razor well after every use, and oil with Blade Oil or store in a dry place.
  • All straight razors must be stropped before use, to straighten burrs and polish the edge for the smoothest shave possible. Be sure to use a good quality strop and accurate technique.
  • Honing/ Sharpening should be done on Japanese synthetic or natural whetstones. You can bring your blade into a Kent of Inglewood store to be honed, with the first time free on any blades purchased from us. Razor honing classes are also available at your nearest Kent of Inglewood location.

About Iwasaki-san - At Sanjo-Seisakujo in Niigata, Kosuke Iwasaki began the production of Kamisori, in addition to his work in metallurgical research, which was then passed to Shigeyoshi Iwasaki, and currently to Ryouichi Mizouchi. The Kamisori that they currently produce have a hagane(cutting edge) of Swedish high carbon steel. The finger rest on Iwasaki kamisori are all hand ground on the side of the wheel. Iwasaki is the benchmark for Japanese razors, and many smiths in the Sanjo region have at one time or another have been under the tutelage of Iwasaki-san in some form.

The proper Blade for the true Gentleman

"Good day, I acquired this marvel a few months past, and though I need only strop it upon the leather from time to time, I must say—it has left me thoroughly astonished. I have shaved with the straight razor for several years now, and this blade is nothing short of exemplary. It is perfectly suited for the final finishing passes, delivering a shave so clean and keen that one can scarcely imagine better. The width is ideal, offering both precision and confidence in hand. I recommend this blade in the strongest possible terms. Indeed, a visit to the shop itself is an experience to behold, nothing short of mind blowing."

Great razor

"Very happy with it. Only complaint is that while it came sharp, I'm convinced it also came with a burr, because it dulled quickly when shaving. Not that I can get it as sharp, but it is a great razor. Appreciate that I can get these in Canada, and the soap and brush I got with it were super awesome. Now I just have to learn to sharpen it!"

great razor!

"I've been using a tosuke kamisori for a while and was curious about the iwasaki so finally got one. This is a great razor but was a bit of a change because I was used to the rubberized grip on the tosuke. Probably a bit of a transition if you are used to western style straight razors but I've only been using my kamisori for a while now and think they are pretty fantastic."

Great Razor

"Hi All I purchased the Iwasaki Kamisori wanting to try something different. The razor I purchased is a right handed razor but I am left handed so I had some concerns about how I would fare using the razor.. I viewed a few “how to” videos on the internet and practiced some positional strokes without actually touching my face at that time. Similar to practice putting in golf I guess. I could have used both sides of the razor a la “western” style of straight razor shaving as is discussed in some forums but, being a respecter of culture and tradition, I wanted to do it the way the Japanese do and so I used my right hand only. That was not as difficult as I had anticipated. I found that actually using the razor was not as bad a I was expecting. Taking my time and going very slowly and carefully and shaving small areas at a time I did very well. There were some areas where I could not shave with the grain on my left cheek because of my arm position and so I went across the grain there. I expect that I’ll prefect my technique as I go. I did 2 passes, First I shaved with the grain and across the grain, the second pass I shaved against the grain and again across the grain for touch up. I am pleased, No cosmetic surgery was the order of the day. No nicks. Did I get the best shave ever ? No but I can see it coming. I am still too new to this razor. Do I recommend it? Yes it is very different and adds adventure to our shaving. Prime caution for beginners. Plan how to shave each area of your face before you start it. Pay attention to the angle and go slowly and deliberately. Stretch your skin. Do that and you’ll stay out of trouble and you’ll feel really great at the end. The above is my personal experience and the opinions are my own.. Yours may differ."

Q&A

Hi, I have an Iwasaki Kamisori and I am hoping you can answer a question for me. The razor has not been used and it is incredibly sharp. I will not need to touch it uno for some time. I do not see any hone wear on the spine, so can I assume its was honed at the factory with tape? And what kind of tape would I use when it comes time to touch it up?
Hello! We use electricians tape :) just make sure it’s put evenly over the spine, and you’re good to go. Hope this helps. -Kolese
Hey just wondering if you guys know when these’ll be back in stock?
Hey there! We have 10 large ones on the way. If you're looking for a different size, just email hello@kentofinglewood.com and we can help!
How do I hone a traditional kamasori? I am familiar with western straight razors but have no experience with kamisori's.
Hi! Kamisori are a little different than western razors, but the principles remain the same! First I'll give a little jargon/razor anatomy in case you are unfamiliar. The rounder/more convex side, which usually has a stamp or maker's mark on it, is called the 'ura'. The other side, which should have no stamp and be flatter/more concave, is called 'omote'. Most people will hone a kamisori at a ratio, with more strokes on the omote side than the ura. I have seen numbers like 2:1, 3:1, etc. Personally I do 7:2. That's seven strokes omote, 2 strokes ura. The ratio doesn't matter too much, what matters is that you are CONSISTENT. Choose a system and STICK TO IT. Consistency is key. This ratio is because of the different grind on each side. However, in terms of technique - it's just as you would sharpen a western razor. Gently place the blade on the stone, set your angle with the spine of the blade, and hone until you see a nice polish. We are starting to produce some video content for YouTube so keep your eyes peeled for that - I'll definitely make sure a kamisori-sharpening video is part of that!
Do you have a stand for the Iwasaki Kamasori ? Or any suggestion to keep it safe (beside the wood box) ? Thank's Dominique
We don't have anything specifically for that. I keep mine wrapped in a nice piece of cloth I found and then back in the box
So are these made by Shigeyoshi Iwasaki, or Ryouichi Mizouchi? Your details state Manufacturer as Iwasaki-san, making it seem like Shigeyoshi Iwasaki.
Hey there! All razors from Iwasaki are now made Mizuochi-san.
