Local Makers: Teaming Up With Tom Brown

Tom Brown is a lifelong miniaturist who has shared his love of miniatures with the masses through a variety of projects, mediums, and platforms. His signature project, done while attending the Alberta College of Art and Design, is his Miniature Kitchen, which he cooks real food in, often for a live audience.

Public engagement has always been a focus of his work, through performances, participatory artworks and treasure hunts, in an effort to share the joy that arises throughout the process with other people.

Tom has also appeared on the tv program @bestinminiature on CBC Television & Netflix! He was even featured on one of my favourite rapper and chef's tv shows, The Untitled Action Bronson Show on Apple TV.

In his most recent and ambitious project to date he recreated a miniature version of the Drawing Room in the legendary Lougheed House and we can't believe how stunning it turned out!

Tom is also known for his more local fun in which he hides some of his amazing miniature creations around the neighbourhood of Inglewood (Hide Find Keep)

Which got us thinking, how cool would it be to have Tom make some custom Kent of Inglewood miniatures to do a scavenger hunt of our own!

So we reached out to Tom and partnered up with him to make four amazing, and functional, Kent miniatures which we will be hiding around the neighbourhood for folks to find each week from the end of July into August!

For his inspiration we wanted him to choose items that brought to mind our Get Dirty Get Clean motto and it's no surprise he landed on a pair of beautiful straight razors with shaving brushes, as well as a Higo No Kami style folding pocket knife.

The Seki Kanetsune Tanzaku-Tou Folding Knife inspired his pocket knife miniatures

Fully functional & sharp, his recreation of the Seki Kanetsune Higo style folding knife we carry is unbelievable (he even got the tiny pin in the handle!) and there will be two versions for you to find.

The mini straight razor handles are stunning and eye catching, much like their real life counter parts, and I can't believe how much I wanna use the tiny shaving brush to apply a lather just one time! This one really reminds me of the famous Spartacus Straight Razor we carry from the renown maker Thiers Issard.

For the finer details, Tom cleverly chose to use guitar picks as the handle material, while our real life razor handles are often made of materials like rams horn or luxury woods, we couldn't believe how perfectly he captured the premium quality of the razors with his miniatures.
