Partner Profile: Sosan Fong
While many folks begin wet-shaving for the savings, they usually stay for the experience. The added feeling of luxury for five or ten minutes of your morning goes a long way to keep you in a great mood throughout your day. One of the artisans that best represent luxurious shaving products is Sosan Fong of Calgary, Alberta.
After retiring from her day job, Sosan took to ceramics as a way to fill time and focus her creative energy. She quickly took to the art, and started challenging herself to see just how many different forms she could create. After much experimenting and prototyping, Sosan is providing three products for Kent of Inglewood stores; shaving mugs, shaving bowls, and traditional shaving scuttles.
As we often do with the people who create the goods in our shops, I sat down with Sosan to ask a few questions about her work.
Thank you for taking the time to chat Sosan, I know you’re busy filling orders for customers. You seem quite successful with your ceramics business, but how did it get started?
This started out as a hobby after my early retirement. I fell in love with clay the moment I touched it. My works are very diverse, so I call myself a hobby potter because I like to try new things, new designs, new glazes and new techniques all the time.
You call yourself a hobbyist, but your products clearly have a professional touch to them. What process lead you to create such well-made pieces?
I pay special attention to fit and finish. I always ask my customers for feedback to improve my design, aesthetic and functionality. The bowls I made for you were special designs, unique to Kent of Inglewood.
I can’t say I’m surprised, your attention to detail is very evident. So, where do you see you taking your brand in the future?
For me, it’s about expanding my pottery creations and glazes. I created a wide range of functional products that I sell through galleries and Etsy. Berry bowls, soap dispensers, and French butter dishes are just a few of my favourites. I also make a lot of decorative items such as paper towel holders and piggy banks. I enjoy challenges and using different techniques.
Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us Sosan, I look forward to seeing what else you create. I think I need to get myself one of those French butter dishes.
We at Kent of Inglewood are very proud to be selling Sosan’s creations. We source as many of our products from local, Canadian suppliers as possible, and Sosan is the ideal provider of high-quality items that come from a local source. If you’re like me and like to treat yourself to a luxurious shave, you need one of her scuttles. They are built with a reservoir for hot-water, designed to keep your lather warm throughout the shave. Whether you do a 3-minute safety razor shave or spend 30 minutes with your straight razor, her products will help you get an excellent lather and keep them warm throughout the process.
