by Nathan Gareau Last updated: May 13, 2021

I was fortunate growing up; my dad taught me a lot of useful things. He taught me about food, how to work hard and get by, and how to appreciate fusion jazz. One thing he neglected, however, was teaching me how to shave. I don’t blame him, he wasn’t taught either, so when it came time to shave the awkward puberty moustache (I wasn’t born with a bushy moustache, shockingly), I got a plastic razor and a bar of soap.

Needless to say, like most people, I hated shaving until I discovered the magic of a safety razor and brush. Overnight my world was changed, and shaving became an adventure, a moment to pamper myself. But something was still missing. My face still got dry, red, and itchy after my shave. This irritation was greatly reduced by using a quality razor, but it was still there. Then aftershave balm entered my life.

Suddenly everything clicked. Now, when I left the bathroom my skin felt enriched, healthy, and happy. No more dryness, no more burn. For the first time in my adult life, I even had clear skin! Since then, I’ve been on the search for the perfect aftershave balm. While I love all of the aftershaves we carry, particularly those from Castle Forbes, Bartigan & Stark and D.R. Harris, the best I’ve tried so far is our own formulation: Kent of Inglewood Aftershave Balm.

Kent of Inglewood Aftershave Balm works wonders, and brings a splash of colour to your counter.Kent of Inglewood Aftershave Balm works wonders, and brings a splash of colour to your counter.

At this point, you’re probably saying, “Well, duh, it’s got your brand on it”, and yes, I admit my bias, but that brand is precisely  why  I love this product. When formulating products that bear our name, we are absolutely relentless with the testing. Brutal is our analysis, picking apart every detail of the product until we find perfection. This product could have launched much, much sooner, and it would have been fine, even good, but we demand  better.

So what makes it so great? For starters, it’s made locally in Ramsay, a 15 minute walk from our Calgary shop, with natural ingredients that don’t compromise on performance. As I mentioned, it’s rigorously tested, but not just by me. We’ve got a whole team of picky shave nerds, all with different skin types, who used each test formula and gave their feedback.

On the performance side, this aftershave balm is sublime. It applies smooth and slick but never slimy. It spreads across the skin easily, absorbing effectively but not instantly. It soothes and nurtures your skin from the exfoliation performed by your razor and protects it from the elements while it heals. Call me a nerd, but I think it feels like a suit of Mithril mail protecting the vulnerable Frodo Baggins. The formulation is thick without being oily, so it hydrates effectively without clogging pores. Finally, it leaves behind no scent, so you can head into work without irritating anyone, or you can throw on your favourite fragrance without spoiling its aroma.

Our balm spreads easily, absorbs quickly, and doesn't leave you oily!

Best of all, it’s suitable for any shave. I’m experienced with a safety razor and straight razor, but I’m also a busy person who’s clumsy at the best of times. My coworkers say if I ever took up WWE wrestling, my stage name would be “Collateral Damage”. Needless to say, I’ve raced through more than one shave, irritating my skin more than it needed to be. Kent of Inglewood Aftershave Balm is always there to fix my mistakes, soothing my irritation and healing my skin, so I don’t look a fool.

When it comes to quality ingredients, this balm has it in spades. I’m not the best with fancy ingredient names, and they can be intimidating, so I’m gonna share a few that I know and let you know what they do:

Cetearyl Alcohol - A plant-based alcohol that softens the skin, and as a “fatty-alcohol”, it is non-drying like other alcohols.

N-Acetal Glucosamine - This stuff has been reported to have numerous beneficial effects on skin cells, including accelerating wound healing, improving skin hydration, and decreasing wrinkles.

Hydrolyzed Rice - Increases the ability of the skin to bind moisture; it leads to increased flexibility and tensile strength.

Niacinamide - Can improve skin texture and strengthens the protective barrier of the skin, which then helps to reduce inflammation.

DL-Panthenol - A fancy name for Vitamin B5, which has anti-inflammatory properties. It can help improve skin hydration, elasticity, and smooth appearance and also soothes irritated skin.

Allantoin - Possesses soothing and anti-irritating properties. It stimulates healthy, normal tissue formation and helps in skin hydration.

Use our aftershave balm after shaving your legs, face, or anything else!

Whether you’re all about the technical nitty-gritty or just love a well-made skincare product, you need to try this balm. It works magic for faces, legs, scalps, and anything else you need to shave! While you’re at it, snag some of our Pre-shave Gel, it works wonders for preventing irritation and dryness. Together, these products form a 1-2 punch that makes your shave smooth, comfortable, and better for your skin!

    Happy shaving.
