The Bakin style axe is the cabin-builder’s best friend! Similar to the European broad axe, the head of this axe is quite thin with a convex grind. The “bearded” design allows you to use the axe while holding directly under the head, making it ideal for hewing logs. That being said, it functions as a limbing hatchet and kindling chopper. It is made with a hard Japanese carbon steel called SK5, so it’s easy to sharpen while still having excellent edge retention. Best of both worlds, in my opinion. As with all wooden-hafted axes, take care to oil the haft of this axe regularly to ensure strength and a tight bond between head and haft.
